SOLAR ENERGY AND CLIMATE CHANGE: PLANNING FOR A SUSTAINABLE KERALA

"Earth has enough resources to meet people’s needs, but will never have enough to satisfy people’s greed" – Mahatma Gandhi     India represents a culture that calls our planet ‘Mother Earth’. Article 48-A of our constitution states “State shall endeavour to protect and improve the environment and safeguard the forests and wildlife of the country”. Article 51-A states that “It is the fundamental duty of every citizen to protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes rivers and wildlife”. The nation’s development process is guided by the path of ‘development without destruction’. Energy consumption and production cause 2/3rd of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. Therefore, Energy Efficiency (on demand side) and Renewable Energy (on the supply side) are considered as two pillars of our sustainable energy movement. Energy Conservation Act (ECA) encourages to efficient use of energy and its conservation. India’s Intended Nationally Determined ...

Solar Batteries for Home Use

Going solar can save you money on energy bills and help the environment at the same time. A properly installed solar panel system can also eventually become an income-producing asset. Battery storage is a way to have additional control overpowering your home. Home battery storage is cheaper than ever, and new incentives available both nationally and in certain states are making going solar with batteries a smart move in more ways than one. The dream of powering your home with  off-grid solar  is still not quite “financially advantageous,” but having a battery in your home to save money on peak electricity costs and keep the lights on during a blackout is a reality today. There’s now a newer and more convenient alternative to solar grid panels in the installation of advanced batteries. These can be charged with extra sun power and used when the weather isn’t so good. There are a lot of benefits to using a battery instead of grid backup. They are as follows: Po...

MICROGRIDS FOR KERALA

The emergence of Microgrid-as-a-Service (MaaS) model for energy challenges is being acknowledged globally. Roof Top Solar only provides energy self-sufficiency, while, Microgrids can accelerate social development. The government of India is expected to firm up a policy on Microgrids by end of 2018. Microgrid development across India is likely to be core to achieving targets under NSM. A pilot programme is being implemented by Jharkhand Renewable Energy Development Agency (JREDA) to electrify 320 households across 11 villages through the development of Microgrids. The works also include turnkey implementation of decentralized distributed SPV power plants along with Power Distribution networks to unelectrified households. Microgrid projects are also attempted in Bihar and UP. Microgrid would also lead distributed energy investments for us. Such innovative business models bring radical changes in Industry. What is a Microgrid ?? Microgrids can be termed as an energy net...

Advantages of Using Solar Power in Petrol Pumps

India has over 50,000 petrol pumps catering to the demand of the country. And do you know how much electricity a petrol pump needs every day? It requires more than 5 KW of electricity every day for their operations. This amounts to a total capacity of over 1,440 KW of power required for a year per petrol station. Running your petrol pump on electricity is possible in the big and medium cities but the petrol pumps, especially in rural India, derive power from diesel generators sets as they do not have a continuous power supply or do not have power lines.  The operation cost for running the pumps on diesel generators sets is very high. So using solar panels is more advantageous than a diesel generator. Use of solar energy in petrol pumps has proven to offer reliable operations of dispensing units even in load shedding hours. The dispensing units last long as the solar system provides superior power quality. Advantages: Can be used on pre-installed inverters Economic, ...

Solar Roof Tiles

As we all know, solar energy can be produced only through solar panels. So we have to think about installing solar panels on our home rooftop . The panels that are used big enough, which occupy more space and they are inconvenient as well. To overcome this disadvantage, a new concept of utilizing solar energy is introduced. It is called solar roof tiles. They are tiles, which can be put over the rooftop, to store energy, but one disadvantage of solar roof tiles is that more amounts of tiles are required to store some amount of energy, and it is costly, as well. Installing solar roof tiles must be done by a certified installer using standard roofing components. The process of installation is similar to fitting normal roof tiles, yet the solar tiles must always have a border of normal roof tiles as opposed to solar panels which are fitted on the rooftop, making them in some cases less aesthetically pleasing. After each unit is fixed, the electric cables are fitted in...

How to plan for solar panels for a new home?

Everyone has a dream to build their own new home. But building a new home is very challenging and a difficult process as well. There are so many things one should keep in mind such as finding the perfect block of land in the best suburbs, selecting the right builder and other things like furnishings, colours, fittings etc. If you decide to install solar panels on your rooftop when your home is being built, you can ensure that your home is designed with solar PV systems. While your solar energy system doesn’t need to be at the centre of all your home design decisions, anticipating and eliminating potential issues at the time of construction is a lot easier than trying to work around them later. The “ideal” solar home has a south-facing roof to capture as much sunlight as possible over the course of the day.  Every roof types are suitable for solar installation but some roof types will be difficult for the solar installers to work with. Sl...

Future of Solar Energy in Kerala

Solar power is now becoming a trend. It is spreading very fast throughout Kerala. We are decided to step up our power generation through renewable energy source like solar. We all know the importance of sustainable power sources and thus the switch to green energy will be painless. Solar energy has been with us for some time. It’s no longer unusual to see rooftop solar panels or larger solar farms. With technology development, solar panels have become widely used and it isn’t just clean energy enthusiasts who install them: people are installing them as a form of  investment . Solar cells, the devices that convert solar energy into electricity, only come in so many forms at the moment. Most of the ones in commercial use are made of silicon. But while these silicon cells dominate the market, they’re far from perfect — on average, they’re only able to achieve 16 to 20 per cent efficiency when it comes to converting solar energy . Compounding solar’s impending ener...

How do On-Grid And Off-Grid Power System Work?

How Do On Grid Power Systems Work? 1. Photovoltaic solar panels mounted on your roof, or on a ground mounted frame, use the sun’s solar radiation to generate DC (Direct Current) electricity. 2. The electricity travels to a grid tie inverter , usually located near to the switchboard which converts the DC electricity into 230 volts AC (Alternating Current) as used in your home. 3. The energy generated can be used within the home or business first and any excess electricity is fed into the national grid. If there is little or no solar energy available because of bad weather or at night, energy is sourced from the national grid. A two way (Import/Export) meter is installed in place of your existing meter, to measure the energy you feed in and take from the national grid. How Do Off-Grid Power Systems Work? 1 . Solar generation solar PV panels mounted on your roof, or on a ground mounted frame, use the sun’s solar radiation to gene...
