Solar Windows For a Smart Future

Solar generation is being used in a variety of ways to give people options on how they want to power their homes. Instead of big, bulky panels on the roof, there is a more discreet roofing alternative. For example, the ability to install solar-powered glass. Solar power is an environmentally sound option for producing electricity using renewable, non-polluting sunlight. However, solar panels only function properly when they have exposure to enough direct sunlight. If you use solar panels indoors or in your vehicle, having tinted windows will likely affect how they work. But as long as some sunlight is present, solar panels will still work.

Solar panels mounted on rooftops and south-facing exterior walls get the best exposure to sun and produce the most power. But small, indoor solar panels are also used for different tasks. For example, solar calculators reduce the need for disposable batteries. The small amount of power that a calculator consumes means that even a heavily tinted window will allow enough solar energy through to run the machine. Solar charging stations allow for indoor battery and device recharging, provided that tinted windows allow enough energy through. Even if you want to use solar panels indoors, adding tinted windows can improve your overall energy efficiency.

Solar Windows are windows that feature embedded photovoltaic elements, capturing a portion of the sunlight that passes through and converting it into electricity.  This can be used as an alternative to indoor solar panels and tinted windows. Solar windows have some of the same benefits as tinted windows, but they produce their own power directly from the light that strikes them.

Basically, a solar window is a window with built-in photovoltaic functionality. This means that they can convert light from the sun into electric energy.

There are 3 major solar window types that are currently available or intensively researched:
  • Photovoltaic films: these are thin films of organic cells coated onto the glass, working also as a retrofit solution for standard window glass
  • Dual glass (also called: double glass or glass-glass) modules, which basically crystalline silicon solar cells sandwiched between two layers of glass
  • Solar-embedded windows, which are glass windows with the solar cells embedded into the glass

Key advantages of solar windows are:
  • Use of natural daylight for power generation
  • A vertical application which is particularly important in space-limited areas such as (big) cities
  • Makes solar PV not only confined to owners of roof-top houses but is virtually applicable to every household, even those in the skyscrapers of the many mega-cities in this world
  • Some types can be retrofit (photovoltaic films)
  • Can potentially further boost decentralization of power generation

Let’s go green with solar windows, the perfect way for the smart future. Use the power of solar energy and together we can create a world of energy efficient solutions.

Advantages of Using Solar Power in Petrol Pumps

India has over 50,000 petrol pumps catering to the demand of the country. And do you know how much electricity a petrol pump needs every day? It requires more than 5 KW of electricity every day for their operations. This amounts to a total capacity of over 1,440 KW of power required for a year per petrol station. Running your petrol pump on electricity is possible in the big and medium cities but the petrol pumps, especially in rural India, derive power from diesel generators sets as they do not have a continuous power supply or do not have power lines.  The operation cost for running the pumps on diesel generators sets is very high. So using solar panels is more advantageous than a diesel generator. Use of solar energy in petrol pumps has proven to offer reliable operations of dispensing units even in load shedding hours. The dispensing units last long as the solar system provides superior power quality. Advantages: Can be used on pre-installed inverters Economic, Smal

Solar Energy in Transportation

As we all know solar energy is obtained from the sun’s radiation and it can be converted into electricity or heat. It is freely available and thanks to advances in technology, we can now harness even more of the solar energy that is continuously available to us. Solar energy is not only sustainable, it is renewable and this means that we will never run out of it. It is about as natural a source of power as it is possible to generate electricity. The creation of solar energy requires little maintenance. Once the solar panels have been installed and are working at maximum efficiency there is only a small amount of maintenance required each year to ensure they are in working order. They are a silent producer of energy. There is absolutely no noise made from photovoltaic panels as they convert sunlight into usable electricity. There are continual advancements in solar panel technolog y which are increasing the efficiency and lowering the cost of production, thus making it, even m

How to plan for solar panels for a new home?

Everyone has a dream to build their own new home. But building a new home is very challenging and a difficult process as well. There are so many things one should keep in mind such as finding the perfect block of land in the best suburbs, selecting the right builder and other things like furnishings, colours, fittings etc. If you decide to install solar panels on your rooftop when your home is being built, you can ensure that your home is designed with solar PV systems. While your solar energy system doesn’t need to be at the centre of all your home design decisions, anticipating and eliminating potential issues at the time of construction is a lot easier than trying to work around them later. The “ideal” solar home has a south-facing roof to capture as much sunlight as possible over the course of the day.  Every roof types are suitable for solar installation but some roof types will be difficult for the solar installers to work with.
